Tension arose yesterday at the Ogun State House of Assembly, as the deputy speaker of the House, Olakunle Oluomo and the Commissioner for Works and infrastructure, Lekan Adegbite engaged in shouting match at the Committee Room during a meeting with the commissioner on the situation of roads in the state.
It was gathered that Adegbite and the deputy speaker, who presided over the meeting engaged in altercation, which nearly turned into fisticuffs during the meeting when Adegbite asked the deputy speaker, to apologise for keeping him waiting for hours.
The House had on Wednesday summoned Adegbite alongside three other commissioners, Adeleke Adewolu (Special Duties), Chief Jide Ojuko (Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs), and Ms Adenrele Adesina (Budget and Planning), over the poor state of rural roads across the state.
It was learnt that, while the Works Commissioner arrived the committee room of the House before 10am, the lawmakers came about one hour behind schedule and the “lateness” provoked altercation between the commissioner who is seen as the most powerful commissioner in the state’s executive council and the legislators.
At about 12:07pm, Adegbite walked out of the Assembly complex, saying his meeting with the lawmakers had been rescheduled to “some other time.”
However, the lawmakers converged for their plenary at the Assembly chambers and deliberated on the matter before the House eventually passed a vote of no confidence on the Commissioner over what they termed a misconduct.
