Sunday Igboho Sent Me Money While We Were Both in Detention – Baba Ijesha

Baba Ijesha and Sunday Igboho

Nollywood actor Olanrewaju Omiyinka, popularly known as Baba Ijesha, has revealed that Yoruba Nation activist Sunday Igboho sent him money and arranged phone calls with him while they were both in detention in different countries.

Baba Ijesha made the disclosure during a gathering attended by Igboho and veteran broadcaster Kola Olootu to celebrate the activist’s birthday.

According to the actor, Igboho maintained contact with him and provided financial assistance while he was serving his prison sentence in Nigeria, despite being detained in the Republic of Benin at the time.

Baba Ijesha explained that Igboho would contact prison officials to arrange telephone conversations between them.

“He used to send money to me. He would call the prison authorities and ask them to give me the phone,” the actor recounted.

He added that prison officials would inform him whenever Igboho called, sometimes expressing surprise because they believed the activist was still in detention.

Igboho reportedly confirmed that the two men maintained contact during their respective periods of incarceration, with the activist held in Cotonou, Benin Republic, while Baba Ijesha was imprisoned in Nigeria.

Igboho was arrested in Cotonou in July 2021 after fleeing Nigeria amid a manhunt linked to his agitation for a Yoruba nation. He was released from detention in March 2022.

Baba Ijesha, meanwhile, was released from prison in November 2025 after spending more than three years in custody following his conviction in a case involving the sexual assault of a minor. His release followed a Court of Appeal decision that overturned aspects of the earlier judgment.
