Supreme Court grants financial autonomy to Local Governments

The 36 governors of the federation have been barred by the Supreme Court from further retaining or utilizing funds that are meant for the 774 Local Government Areas, LGAs, in the country.  The apex court ruled that it is illegal and unconstitutional for governors to continue to receive and seize funds allocated to LGAs in their states.  It maintained that the “dubious practice” which has gone on for over two decades, was a clear violation of Section 162 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended. Woman arrested for attempting to smuggle drug to Abuja inmate

Officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre, Abuja have arrested a woman identified as Precious Yusuf while attempting to smuggle drugs to an inmate. The suspect was said to have disguised as a visitor to one of the inmates but was apprehended during a search by the correctional service officials.
