Police Probe Mysterious Death of Woman at Works Minister David Umahi’s Ebonyi Residence

The Nigeria Police Force has launched an investigation into the mysterious death of a young woman, Mary Habbila, who reportedly died under unclear circumstances at the country residence of the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

According to reports, Habbila, alongside another woman identified as Anita Baski, both said to be from Kaduna State, arrived at the minister’s residence on June 26, 2026.

The following morning, Habbila was reportedly found unresponsive inside the residence. A police officer attached to the minister’s security team, Jonathan Bawado, was said to have alerted medical personnel. However, efforts to save her life proved unsuccessful as she was confirmed dead. Her remains were subsequently deposited in a mortuary.

The incident was initially reported at the Ohaozara Divisional Police Headquarters before the case was transferred to the Ebonyi State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Abakaliki for a comprehensive investigation.

As of the time of filing this report, the exact cause of Habbila’s death has not been made public, while the outcome of an autopsy, if conducted, has yet to be released by the authorities.

Neither the Ebonyi State Police Command nor the Federal Ministry of Works has issued a detailed official statement explaining the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Police authorities are continuing their investigation and have urged members of the public to refrain from speculation until the facts surrounding the woman’s death are established.

The case has attracted widespread public attention, with many awaiting the outcome of the police investigation to determine the circumstances that led to Habbila’s death.
