Iyabo Obasanjo Returns to PDP, Backs Adebutu’s 2027 Ogun Governorship Bid

Former Ogun Central Senator, Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, has officially rejoined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), just days after resigning from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Her return was confirmed on Monday when she made a surprise appearance at the PDP secretariat in Abeokuta during the unveiling of Dr. Lateefat Yemi Kolapo-Sowunmi as the party’s deputy governorship candidate for the 2027 Ogun State election.

Her presence immediately stirred excitement among party members, who welcomed her warmly as she joined PDP governorship candidate, Ladi Adebutu, and state chairman, Abayomi Tella, in formally presenting the running mate to supporters.

Iyabo Obasanjo also participated in a symbolic moment at the event, raising the hand of the deputy governorship candidate alongside other party leaders, signalling renewed alignment with the party’s leadership and direction.

Party insiders disclosed that her full reinstatement into the PDP is expected to be formalised at a reception scheduled for Tuesday.

Her return marks another political shift for the former senator, who had defected to the APC in January with ambitions to contest the Ogun governorship ticket. However, she reportedly failed to secure the party’s nomination, leading to her resignation from the ruling party last week.

In her resignation letter, she cited what she described as persistent disrespect, rejection, and unfair treatment within the APC structure in Ogun State.

Speaking at the PDP event, Iyabo urged voters to remain vigilant ahead of the 2027 elections, warning against what she described as electoral malpractice experienced in previous governorship polls.

She alleged that the PDP candidate, Ladi Adebutu, had been denied victory in earlier elections and expressed confidence that the outcome would be different in 2027.

Earlier in the programme, PDP State Chairman Abayomi Tella officially unveiled Kolapo-Sowunmi as the party’s running mate, describing her as a valuable addition to the ticket.

In her acceptance speech, the deputy governorship candidate expressed appreciation to the party leadership for the confidence placed in her, describing her nomination as a call to service.

She pledged loyalty to the PDP and its governorship candidate, promising to contribute her experience and dedication toward what she called the rebuilding of Ogun State.

The development further reshapes the political landscape in Ogun State as parties intensify early manoeuvres ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
