A woman identified as Mrs Iyabo Sowunmi has been arrested for allegedly attempting to smuggle a substance suspected to be cannabis into the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Ibara, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Sowunmi was reportedly arrested at about 1:33pm on Friday, August 28, 2026, during a routine security screening at the entrance of the custodial facility.
According to the Nigerian Correctional Service, Ogun State Command, the suspect had visited an inmate identified as Dare Sowunmi, who is reportedly on death row.
During the screening, correctional officers allegedly discovered a sachet of Milo beverage containing a substance suspected to be “colos”, a local term commonly used for cannabis.
The discovery was made at the main gate of the facility as officers carried out their standard checks on items being brought into the custodial centre.
The Ogun State Command disclosed the incident in a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, Odukoya Owolola Olayinka.
Following her arrest, Sowunmi was reportedly handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The Controller of Corrections, Ogun State Command, Abioye Kamoru Adesina, commended the officers who detected the suspected contraband, describing the incident as a demonstration of vigilance and professionalism.
Adesina reiterated the Correctional Service’s zero-tolerance stance towards drug trafficking and other criminal activities within custodial facilities.
He warned members of the public against attempting to compromise the security of correctional centres by introducing prohibited items.
The command stressed that custodial facilities are intended for the reformation and rehabilitation of inmates and should not be allowed to become channels for the circulation of illicit substances.
The suspect’s case is now expected to be investigated by the NDLEA, with further legal action dependent on the outcome of the investigation.
