Gunmen Storm Anambra Church, Kill Two, Torch Buildings During Early-Morning Service

Two persons were feared killed on Sunday after armed men attacked St. Andrews Anglican Church in Lilu, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The gunmen, who invaded the church premises at about 7:30 a.m. while worshippers were gathering for service, opened fire indiscriminately, sending members scampering for safety.

Witnesses said the assailants also set ablaze the priest’s residence, several vehicles, and parts of the church building during the operation, which lasted several minutes.

Among the victims was the wife of the church’s priest, who was reportedly shot at close range. Another resident who attempted to flee the scene was also killed. Several other people sustained varying degrees of injuries.

The Anambra State Police Command, confirming the incident, described it as “a senseless and coordinated act of violence.” Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu said security operatives had been deployed to the area, with patrols and surveillance intensified to track the attackers.

“We are working with community leaders and relevant stakeholders to ensure those behind this barbaric act are apprehended,” the police spokesperson added.

Sunday’s attack adds to growing concerns about rising insecurity in Ihiala and surrounding communities, where multiple incidents of violence have been recorded in recent months.

Authorities have urged residents to remain calm and provide useful information that could assist the ongoing investigation.
