A Lagos State Police Sergeant, identified as Johnson Okediji, has reportedly died after he was allegedly knocked down and dragged under a vehicle during a stop-and-search operation in the Egbeda area of Lagos.
The incident reportedly occurred on Saturday, September 26, 2026, along Olugbede Street, Egbeda, when police officers conducting a stop-and-search operation flagged down a Lexus ES 350.
According to the police account, the driver, identified as Olumide Olusola, initially stopped but allegedly accelerated as Sergeant Okediji approached the driver’s side of the vehicle.
The officer was reportedly knocked down and dragged underneath the vehicle, sustaining multiple fractures and severe head injuries.
He was subsequently rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) for medical attention but was later pronounced dead.
The driver was arrested and taken into police custody in connection with the incident.
However, while being paraded by the police, Olusola reportedly gave a different account of what happened. He claimed that the vehicle’s brakes failed, resulting in the collision with the police officer.
The claim of brake failure has not been independently established, while police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the officer’s death are ongoing.
