Catholic Priest killed while mediating marital dispute in Umuahia

A Catholic priest with the Umuahia Diocese, Very Reverend Fr. (Major) Goddy C. Oparaekwe (Rtd), has died after being violently attacked while attempting to mediate a domestic dispute involving a separated couple in his parish.

The tragic incident occurred on June 17, 2025, when Fr. Oparaekwe, known for his peace-building efforts, was struck with a hard object by the estranged husband of a parishioner during a visit to the family’s residence.

According to eyewitness accounts, the priest had accompanied the couple’s daughter and another man to the home to retrieve a motorcycle. The woman and her children had earlier vacated the house due to ongoing domestic tensions. Despite previous warnings from the husband to stay away, Fr. Oparaekwe had continued efforts to resolve the conflict peacefully.

Upon their arrival, the man reportedly attacked the priest without warning and later chased away the others with a knife. Fr. Oparaekwe was initially taken to a nearby chemist for first aid and then transferred to Madonna Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries around midnight.

The suspect has been arrested and is currently in police custody. Authorities say the attack is being investigated as a case of premeditated murder.

Fr. Oparaekwe, a retired military chaplain and respected figure within the diocese, is being mourned across the community for his commitment to peace and pastoral service.
