VIDEO: Ondo Traditional Ruler Shot Dead at Colleague’s Burial Ceremony

Tragedy struck Ayeka community in Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State after a traditional ruler, High Chief Akinwalere Akinola, was shot dead during the burial rites of a fellow traditional ruler.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, while traditional rulers and other members of the community were gathered to perform funeral rites for their late colleague.

According to a community source, a firearm was suddenly discharged during the ceremony, with the bullet striking Akinola in the head.

The traditional ruler reportedly died instantly, throwing the gathering into confusion.

The exact circumstances surrounding the discharge of the firearm remain unclear. Some residents reportedly described the incident as an accidental discharge, but the police have not yet officially established that as the cause.

The Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, confirmed the incident and disclosed that one suspect had been arrested.

“Investigation is ongoing. For now, one person has been arrested. Updates will be shared on the incident in due course,” the police spokesperson said.

The police are expected to establish how the firearm was discharged and determine whether the shooting was accidental or deliberate.
