Nigeria Premier League: Fans Attack Referee, Other Officials Over Penalty Incident

The Week 36 Nigeria Football Premier League game between Sunshine Stars and Lobi Stars in Akure, Ondo state, didn’t go down smoothly as fans of the home team decided to breach the rules of the League Management Company (LMC). Fans of Sunshine Stars stormed the football field and attacked the referee and other football officials for failing to award a penalty.

The match was stopped with 13 minutes left to the end of the match when the fans invaded the pitch to beat up match officials as well as the opposition team’s camera man.

According to Lobi Stars on their official Twitter handle (@lobistars), the official camera man of the team was attacked, beaten unconscious and his camera destroyed. He was immediately rushed to hospital.

Lobi Stars opened the scoring after six minutes through Abdulrahman Bashir, but the home fans went on rampage when they felt Sunshine ought to have been awarded two penalties in the course of the game.
