The Nigerian military has rescued 47 persons held captive by terrorists of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) during a successful counter-insurgency operation in Borno State.
The rescue operation, carried out by troops in collaboration with other security agencies, targeted terrorist enclaves in parts of the North-East where ISWAP fighters have continued to operate despite sustained military offensives.
According to military sources, the rescued victims comprised women, children, and other civilians who had been forcibly held by the insurgents.
The operation also led to the recovery of weapons, ammunition, and other items used by the terrorists.
The military said the freed captives were immediately screened and provided with necessary medical attention before being handed over to relevant authorities for rehabilitation and reintegration.
Security experts described the rescue as another significant breakthrough in the ongoing fight against terrorism in the North-East, noting that sustained pressure on insurgent groups has continued to weaken their operational capacity.
Residents of affected communities welcomed the development and commended the troops for their courage and commitment to restoring peace in the region.
The latest operation underscores the military’s determination to dismantle remaining terrorist strongholds and secure communities that have endured years of insurgency-related violence in Borno and other parts of the North-East.
