Kidnapped Oyo Pupils, Teachers Regain Freedom After 56 Days in Captivity

The pupils and teachers abducted from three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have finally regained their freedom after spending nearly two months in captivity.

The victims, who were kidnapped on May 15, 2026, were rescued after a coordinated security operation that lasted more than 50 days. President Bola Tinubu confirmed their release, describing the operation as a major breakthrough in the fight against terrorism and kidnapping. Security agencies also arrested eight suspects, while several others were neutralised during the operation.

The abductees were taken from Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; L.A. Primary School; and Community Grammar School, Esiele, where gunmen seized 39 pupils and seven teachers during coordinated attacks.

Tragically, one of the abducted teachers, Michael Oyedokun, was killed shortly after the abduction, making the rescue bittersweet for the affected communities.

The release of the remaining victims has sparked widespread relief among families, residents, and education stakeholders, ending weeks of anxiety and nationwide concern over their safety.

Authorities have yet to release the identities of the rescued pupils and teachers. The victims are expected to undergo medical examinations, counselling, and rehabilitation before being reunited fully with their families.

The rescue marks the end of one of the most disturbing school abduction incidents in southwestern Nigeria and has renewed calls for stronger security around schools to prevent similar attacks in the future.
