Six Nigerian law students who were abducted last week in Benue State have regained their freedom, following a coordinated rescue operation by security operatives.
The students, all undergraduates from various universities preparing for admission into the Nigerian Law School, were reportedly kidnapped while traveling along the Otukpo–Enugu highway on their way to Makurdi for a preparatory workshop.
Security sources said the victims were rescued late Wednesday night in a forested area near Agatu local government after days of intensive surveillance and intelligence gathering. The operation was carried out by a joint team of the Nigerian Army, Police, and local vigilante groups.
Confirming the development on Thursday, Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Catherine Anene, said the students were found unharmed but visibly traumatized.
“All six victims have been rescued alive. We commend the joint efforts of our operatives and the local communities for the success of this operation. The students are currently receiving medical attention and psychological support,” Anene stated.
Family members of the rescued students expressed relief and gratitude to the authorities, with some recounting the harrowing days spent without contact or assurance of their children’s safety.
Details about the kidnappers remain sketchy, but police say efforts are underway to apprehend the culprits. At least two suspects were reportedly arrested during the operation and are being interrogated.
The incident has once again raised concerns about rising insecurity in the North Central region, especially the targeting of students and academic travelers. The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and several student unions have since called on the federal government to boost security measures around schools and major highways.
Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia, in a statement, praised the rescue effort and assured residents of his administration’s commitment to securing lives and property.
“The safety of our young people, especially students pursuing their academic dreams, remains a top priority. We will not tolerate criminal elements disrupting peace in Benue State,” the statement read.
The rescued students are expected to be reunited with their families after completing medical evaluations.
