Former Nigerian U-17 player jailed in Denmark for rape

Former Golden Eaglets star Akinkunmi Amoo, who currently plays for FC Copenhagen in Denmark, has been sentenced to one year in prison for sexual assault.

The news of his sentencing was confirmed by former BBC World Football reporter Osasu Obayiuwana. Amoo, a petite winger, has been embroiled in legal troubles since April, July, and August 2022, facing criminal charges from Danish authorities.

He was arrested on September 10, 2022, and released on bail on October 7. Amoo is appealing the decision. The outcome of Friday’s trial was reported by Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet, which detailed the charges of rape, attempted rape, and violations against multiple women.

Amoo, 21 years old, was part of the Nigerian U-17 squad that finished fourth in the 2019 U-17 AFCON and participated in the U-17 World Cup. He later transferred to Swedish side Hammarby before joining FC Copenhagen in January 2022. However, he made only two league appearances for the club last season.
