Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele Re-Arrested by DSS at Federal High Court in Lagos

The suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, faced further troubles as he was re-arrested by the Department of State Service (DSS) right on the premises of the Federal High Court in Lagos.

Earlier in the day, the DSS had brought Emefiele to court and charged him with illegal possession of firearms. However, the trial judge, Justice Nicolas Oweibo, granted him bail, requiring a sum of N20 million and a surety of the same amount. The judge also signed a remand warrant, directing that Emefiele be held at Ikoyi prison, Lagos, until he fulfills the bail conditions.

An attempt by prison officials to take Emefiele into custody was met with resistance from DSS operatives, leading to a confrontation. Subsequently, the prison officials left the court following an apparent intervention from higher authorities.

As the prison vehicles departed, the DSS operatives positioned their two Hilux pick-up vans strategically, while more of their personnel assembled outside the courtroom.
