Undergraduate Sentenced to 3 Years in Prison for Internet Fraud in Port Harcourt, Nigeria

An undergraduate student of the University of Calabar named Peter Againpriye was sentenced to three years in prison by a Federal High Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

He was convicted of internet fraud, which included charges of impersonation, obtaining money by false pretense, and possession of fraudulent documents. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) brought three counts against him.

Peter Againpriye, also known as Diana Wilson, pleaded guilty to the charges. One of the charges stated that he obtained €3,000 from someone named Keess Darr under false pretenses, claiming to invest in Forex. He was arrested in June 2023 during an operation called Eagle Sweep, at Golf Estate in Port Harcourt.

During the investigation, it was found that the convict engaged in internet fraud by using various Gmail, Instagram, and Facebook accounts while pretending to be Diana Wilson to defraud Keess Darr.

The presiding judge, Justice E. A. Obile, sentenced Peter Againpriye to one-year imprisonment on each count, with an option to pay a fine of N50,000 for each count instead of serving additional time. The judge also ordered the forfeiture of the iPhone 12 Pro Max and iPhone XR recovered from the convict to the government.
