Tanker Brake Failure Leads to Collision in Lagos

A Conoil Plc. tanker, carrying 35,000 liters of fuel, lost control on the National Stadium bridge in Surulere, Lagos. It collided with a Volkswagen Golf saloon car (registration number KRD 810 EA), containing two people, including a pregnant woman. Additionally, a motorcyclist sustained injuries during the incident.

The truck, which was en route from Apapa to deliver its cargo in Ikeja, experienced brake failure. Eyewitnesses reported that the driver struggled to control the tanker, leading to the collision with the saloon car.

The injured pregnant woman was rushed to Randle Hospital, while the injured motorcyclist was admitted to Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH). The woman’s husband was contacted and is with her.

Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service deployed the Ilupeju Fire Crew to apply a chemical foam compound to mitigate the fuel’s risk. They also rescued two individuals from the car. Fortunately, the tanker driver and his assistant escaped without injuries.

Traffic was diverted from stretches of Western Avenue between Barracks and Stadium Bus Stops to allow for the evacuation of the tanker, its contents, and the car. Multiple rescue agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Transport Management Authority (LASTMA), and Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, were on the scene to manage the situation.
