Oyo Teachers Begin Indefinite Strike Over Abduction of Colleagues and Pupils

Public primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State have commenced an indefinite strike following the abduction of teachers and pupils by suspected bandits in Oriire Local Government Area.
The strike, directed by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), took effect on Monday, June 1, as the union intensified pressure on authorities to secure the safe release of the victims.

According to the NUT, at least 46 teachers and pupils were kidnapped on May 15 from Community Grammar School, Yawota Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and L.A. Primary School in Oriire LGA. The union expressed concern over the continued captivity of the victims, describing the situation as a major source of fear and anxiety among teachers, parents and other education stakeholders.

In a statement jointly signed by Oyo State NUT Chairman, Hassan Fatai, and Secretary, Salami Olukayode, the union said the industrial action would remain in force until meaningful progress is made in rescuing the abductees.

The union noted that the insecurity has disrupted academic activities, as many parents have become reluctant to send their children to school. It added that the strike is aimed at compelling relevant authorities to intensify efforts toward the unconditional release of the victims.

Teachers across public primary and secondary schools in the state have been directed to comply fully with the strike order, remain peaceful, and stay at home pending further directives.
The NUT also reaffirmed its support for the abducted teachers, pupils and their families, pledging to continue engaging government agencies through lawful means until all those held captive regain their freedom.
