The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has cautioned content creators, bloggers, and social media influencers against recording police personnel while they are carrying out official duties without proper authorization.
Disu issued the warning amid the growing trend of citizens using smartphones and digital devices to capture and share videos of police officers during operations, checkpoints, patrols, and other law enforcement activities.
According to the police chief, unauthorized recording of officers on duty could compromise ongoing security operations, expose sensitive tactics, and endanger the lives of personnel involved in law enforcement activities. He stressed that while citizens have the right to document public events, such actions should not interfere with police work or jeopardize public safety.
The IGP urged content creators to act responsibly and avoid actions that could obstruct officers performing their duties. He noted that individuals found violating relevant laws or hindering police operations could face legal consequences.
The warning comes at a time when social media platforms have become powerful tools for citizen journalism, with videos involving police officers often generating widespread public attention and debate.
However, security experts argue that unrestricted recording and live-streaming of security operations may create risks, particularly during sensitive investigations, anti-crime operations, and emergency response situations.
Disu reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to professionalism, accountability, and respect for citizens’ rights, while emphasizing the need to balance transparency with national security considerations.
He called on Nigerians, especially digital content creators, to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and support efforts aimed at maintaining peace, public order, and security across the country.
