Nigeria Labour Congress Criticizes Tinubu’s Minimum Wage Remarks

The Nigeria Labour Congress criticized President Bola Tinubu’s declaration about an imminent review of the minimum wage.

The Congress stated that the review is supposed to take place in 2024 as stipulated by law and expressed concerns about the lack of cooperation and dialogue from the Tinubu administration with organized labor.

They also pointed out that while the private sector has quickly implemented wage awards, the government has failed to do the same for public workers. Additionally, the Congress raised worries about the current economic challenges faced by Nigerian workers due to hyperinflation and the removal of the petrol subsidy until 2024 when the minimum wage is set to be reviewed.

They also mentioned that the negotiations with the Federal Government have been hindered as the sub-committee on wage award has not been inaugurated and has not held any meetings.
