New Zealand Runner Zane Robertson Faces Attempted Rape and Firearms Charges in Kenyan Court

Zane Robertson, who is currently serving an eight-year doping ban, appeared in a Kenyan court to answer charges that include attempted rape, illegal firearm possession, and possession of unspecified drugs.

The 33-year-old athlete, residing in Iten, Kenya, was arrested after a woman accused him of attempting to rape her during a birthday celebration at his house. Robertson, denying the charges, has been detained for further investigation, with the next court hearing scheduled for September 28.

In addition to the attempted rape accusation, Robertson was found in possession of an AK47 rifle and drugs, the substances of which are yet to be identified pending laboratory testing. The prosecution stated that the rifle, magazine, and ammunition would undergo forensic analysis.

Furthermore, investigators plan to verify Robertson’s immigration status in Nairobi. This case marks a troubling turn for the athlete, who had previously received an eight-year ban for doping, involving Erythropoietin (EPO) and tampering with evidence.

Robertson, known for his achievements in long-distance running, notably earned a bronze medal in the 5000m at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
