Gunmen have reportedly shot dead the All Progressives Congress (APC) chairman of Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, Ishaq Yunusa, in a fresh attack along the Itobe–Ochadamu road.
The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday evening when armed men emerged from the surrounding bush and opened fire on a vehicle conveying the APC chieftain and another occupant.
Yunusa was said to have sustained fatal gunshot injuries during the attack and was found dead inside a blue Toyota Corolla.
The assailants reportedly abducted the other occupant of the vehicle before fleeing the scene.
The attack has heightened concerns over the security situation in parts of Kogi State, particularly along major roads where travellers have previously faced attacks by criminal elements.
Security operatives have reportedly commenced efforts to track down the attackers and rescue the abducted victim.
As of the time of filing this report, details surrounding the identity of the gunmen and the motive for the attack remained unclear.
