Tragedy struck in Edo State on Saturday following the collapse of a hotel building in Okpella, Etsako East Local Government Area, leading to the death of the hotel owner and injuries to several others.
The deceased, identified as Mr. Sylvester Igbineweka, popularly known as “Don Sylvester,” was reportedly supervising ongoing renovation work on the building when the structure suddenly gave way.
Eyewitnesses said about 20 persons, including workers and guests, narrowly escaped death as they managed to flee or were rescued from the rubble shortly after the incident occurred around midday.
An eyewitness, John Otasowie, told reporters that the building had shown signs of structural weakness but work continued despite warnings. “Some people were even outside when we just heard a loud sound and the whole building collapsed. It was like a scene from a movie,” he said.
Officials from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the state’s emergency response team responded to the scene and commenced search and rescue operations. As of press time, no other fatalities had been confirmed.
The Edo State Police Command confirmed the incident and said investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the collapse. The state government has also ordered a technical audit of similar structures in the area to prevent future tragedies.
Late Mr. Igbineweka was a well-known figure in the Okpella community and owned several hospitality businesses across the state. His death has thrown the town into mourning, with tributes pouring in from friends, business associates, and local leaders.
Residents are calling on the state government to enforce stricter building regulations and conduct thorough inspections, especially in ongoing construction and renovation projects.
