The convoy of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Borno State, Mustapha Gubio, has come under attack by suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists.
The incident reportedly occurred at about 2:30pm on Thursday along the Kareto-Damasak Road in northern Borno State, while Gubio and members of his entourage were travelling to Damasak.
Gubio was said to be on an appreciation tour following his emergence as the APC’s consensus governorship candidate for the 2027 election when the convoy was attacked.
According to the Borno State Police Command, the attackers engaged the convoy with improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs).
Security personnel attached to the convoy reportedly responded to the attack and succeeded in repelling the terrorists, who fled into the surrounding bush.
The police said security operatives subsequently conducted a sweep of the area to rule out the presence of additional explosives before the convoy was evacuated to a safe location.
No member of Gubio’s entourage was killed or injured in the attack, according to the police.
Police spokesperson, ASP Nahum Daso, confirmed that the convoy was able to continue its journey after the attack.
However, reports indicated that some armoured vehicles belonging to the security team were damaged during the confrontation.
The incident has renewed concerns over the security situation in parts of northern Borno, where insurgent groups have continued to carry out attacks despite sustained military operations against them.
