With an aim to make the Access Bank/Lagos Marathon a sought after international event, Lagos State governor, Mr. Akinwumi Ambode has taken over the running of the 2017 edition of the race fixed for February 11, 2017.
Mr. Ambode who was speaking at the Lagos State government house at the weekend, stated that he was very determined to make a good show of the marathon as it was part of his agenda to transform Lagos to becoming one of the best cities in the world. He said they will also use the race to mark the 50th anniversary of Lagos State.
“I will be in charge of the logistics this time around. This is because I want the Access Bank/Lagos Marathon to be one of the best in the world. We are deeply committed, and are going to do all our best to make it right.
“Our aim is to make it the best marathon race in Africa and also make it an IAAF labelled marathon,” said the governor.
Herbert Wigwe, Access Bank CEO, said he was happy with the outing of the maiden edition, which was rated 69 best race in the world.
“We want to push it higher to be in the top ten of marathon races in the world and we are working towards achieving this,” he said.
Over 50,000 athletes including world top ten runners and their local counterparts are being expected to register for the race which has a $50,000 prize money.
