Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan has lost her women’s 100m hurdles world record after American Olympic champion Masai Russell produced a stunning performance at the Zurich Diamond League.
Russell clocked 12.09 seconds to break Amusan’s previous world record of 12.12 seconds, which the Nigerian set in the semi-final of the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, United States.
The American shaved 0.03 seconds off Amusan’s mark to bring an end to the Nigerian’s four-year reign as the world record holder in the event.
Amusan also competed in the Zurich race and finished second in 12.23 seconds, but could not prevent Russell from making history.
The record-breaking performance came at the Letzigrund Stadium during the Zurich Diamond League meeting on Thursday, August 27, 2026.
Amusan’s 12.12-second mark had stood since July 24, 2022, when she shattered the previous world record and subsequently won the World Championship title.
Russell’s latest achievement marks a major milestone in her career and makes her the new women’s 100m hurdles world record holder.
Despite losing her world record, Amusan remains one of the most accomplished hurdlers in Nigerian and African athletics history.
