The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested four police officers accused of extorting N53,000 from the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu (SAN), during an illegal stop-and-search operation in Abuja.
The FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, disclosed the incident on Monday while briefing journalists in Abuja. He said the officers had abandoned their assigned duty posts and mounted an unauthorised checkpoint around the Banex area of Wuse, where they allegedly extorted motorists without realising that one of their victims was the ICPC chairman.
According to Sanusi, the officers forced Dr. Aliyu to withdraw N53,000 through a Point of Sale (POS) operator, made him pay the transaction charges, and later shared the money among themselves. The police commissioner condemned their actions, describing the suspects as individuals who had no business wearing the police uniform.
The four officers have been detained and are undergoing disciplinary proceedings, including an orderly room trial, which could lead to their dismissal from the Nigeria Police Force if found guilty.
Sanusi also reiterated the command’s commitment to eliminating extortion and other forms of misconduct by police personnel, warning that any officer found engaging in such acts would face severe sanctions.
