Paul Biya seeks another term after 43 years as president, vote counting begins

Vote counting has begun in Cameroon after Sunday’s presidential election in which 92-year-old Paul Biya, the world’s oldest serving president, sought to extend his 43-year rule.

Polling ended late Sunday, with ballot boxes moved under tight security to collation centres. Officials say early results are expected in the coming days.

The election was largely calm but marked by low turnout and disruptions in the English-speaking regions affected by separatist violence.

Biya, in power since 1982, is running for an eighth term under the ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement. Critics accuse him of clinging to power, while supporters say his leadership ensures stability.

If re-elected, Biya’s new term will last until 2032—when he will be 99years old.
