Tragedy struck in Benin City on Thursday when the Edo State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Agun Gbenga, slumped and died during a public event.
Gbenga, who had just delivered a goodwill message at a programme organized by the International Association of World Peace Advocates (IAWPA) at the Bishop Kelly Pastoral Centre, suddenly collapsed before the gathering.
He was immediately rushed to the Military Base Hospital in Benin, but doctors confirmed him dead on arrival.
Eyewitnesses and colleagues described the incident as shocking, noting that the commandant had shown no visible signs of ill health before the collapse.
The NSCDC authorities are yet to issue an official statement on his death, which has thrown the security community and Edo State residents into mourning.
