Two persons arrested with 70 cartons of expired drugs

Two men were arrested by the operatives from the Okokomaiko Divisional Police headquarters, on Saturday, after intercepting a Volkswagen LT bus at the Afromedia area alleged to be conveying some cartons of expired drugs.

It was gathered that 70 cartons of Feed Fine Cyproheptadine Caplets 4g, all with 2016 as the expiry date, were found inside the bus.

This was confirmed in a statement made on X formerly Twitter by the Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, on his X page on Sunday.

The statement confirmed that the two occupants of the vehicle, Augustine Egemoye, aged 60 and Innocent Eremosele, aged 35, confessed to their crimes and said they were taking the expired drugs to somebody in Alaba who would print a new expiry date and thereafter proceed with the drugs to Port Harcourt, Rivers State to be exchanged for money.

Hundeyin tweeted, “At about 5:40pm yesterday (Saturday), a patrol team from Okokomaiko Division stopped and searched a Volkswagen LT bus at Afromedia. Found in the bus were seventy cartons of Feed Fine Cyproheptadine Caplets 4g, all with expiry date of 2016.

“The two occupants of the vehicle, Augustine Egemoye ‘m’ aged 60 and Innocent Eremosele ‘m’ aged 35 confessed they were taking the expired drugs to somebody in Alaba who would change the expiry dates and thereafter proceed with the drugs to Port Harcourt to be sold. Suspects, drug and the vehicle are currently in custody.

“Efforts are on to arrest the owner of the drugs, the individual altering expiry dates and other indicted persons.”

A few months ago, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control arraigned two businessmen over an alleged sale and distribution of fake and unregistered pharmaceutical products.

The two businessmen were arraigned on a five-count charge at the Federal High Court, Awka, Anambra State capital.

The suspects, Emmanuel Ejidike and Anayo Okoye, own pharmaceutical stores at Onitsha.

Suspects were charged with possessing and selling fake Ampiclox capsules, Krisscin 500mg, Amoxil 500mg, Artesunate, and Chloramphenicol capsules.
