Two Arrested in Abuja for Romance Scam and Identity Theft

The National Cybercrime Centre of the Nigeria Police Force has apprehended two individuals, Jerry Okoye and Ifeanyi Nwosu, in Abuja for their involvement in a romance scam. They are accused of conspiring and committing identity theft. Evidence of their criminal activities was found on their electronic devices.

The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, emphasized the police’s commitment to ensuring the safety of citizens by actively combating cybercrimes like identity theft, romance scams, sextortion, and others.

Jerry Okoye, who claimed to have been in the music industry and runs a public relations company, confessed to engaging in fraudulent activities on Facebook since 2014. Ifeanyi Nwosu, a close associate of Okoye, admitted to having financial transactions with a 69-year-old woman named Winnie.

The police urge the public to exercise caution when interacting with individuals online, especially those they haven’t met in person, and encourage collaboration in securing the cyber-space and communities from such threats.
