Truck Driver’s Death Sparks Protest on Lagos Expressway

Yesterday, truck drivers in Lagos barricaded the Oshodi/Apapa expressway in protest following the alleged killing of one of their colleagues by a policeman from the Lagos State Task Force.

The incident occurred when the task force team attempted to impound a truck blocking the road. The driver, Toheeb Girisi, resisted, claiming he was adding water to the truck’s radiator. During the struggle, one policeman allegedly shot him from behind.

This sparked a protest, with truck drivers blocking the road by burning tires, causing traffic disruptions. It took reinforcements from the police and military to restore calm. The victim, Toheeb Girisi, was 25 years old and was on his way to deliver goods when the tragic incident occurred. He leaves behind no immediate family to carry on his legacy. The incident happened at around 2:45 am on Tuesday, September 5, 2023.
