Over 1,000 Victims Rescued: NAPTIP Kano Zonal Command Battles Human Trafficking Menace

Between January and July 2023, the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Kano Zonal Command, has successfully rescued a total of 1,085 victims of human trafficking.

Out of this number, 932 victims were rescued from irregular migration and were repatriated through the efforts of the International Organization for Migration and the National Emergency Management Agency of Nigeria.

In addition to that, the Zonal Command also saved 163 victims who were being trafficked to European countries via Niger Republic and Libya. Some of these victims were rescued from these countries themselves.

The victims were predominantly female, making up 80% of the rescued individuals, while males accounted for the remaining 20%.

During this period, the agency secured 14 convictions for human trafficking, resulting in various correctional terms for the offenders. To combat human trafficking and child labor, NAPTIP organized campaigns and sensitization programs in markets, schools, and motor parks. Additionally, Anti-Human Trafficking Vanguards were established in six federal government colleges in Kano, Jigawa, and Bauchi states.

Apart from tackling human trafficking, the agency also addressed cases of domestic violence. NAPTIP expressed its appreciation for the support received from various stakeholders, including other security agencies, the Kano State Government, civil society organizations, and religious leaders.

The agency called on the public to provide intelligence that can help in curbing human trafficking in the region, assuring them that the doors of NAPTIP are always open to receive information on human trafficking and child labor.
