Monaco Crash Out Of UCL

Last season’s Champions League semi-finalists Monaco are out of Europe following defeat by RB Leipzig.

Leonardo Jardim’s side have collected two points from five matches and finish bottom of Group G, meaning they do not even drop into the Europa League.

Needing to win to keep alive their hopes, Monaco found themselves 3-0 down after 31 minutes following a Jemerson own goal and two strikes from Timo Werner.

Radamel Falcao pulled a goal back for Monaco, before Naby Keita ended the home side’s hopes just before half-time.

“We’ve always paid heavily for our errors in this group,” coach Jardim said. “We haven’t been up to the level of such a competition, with three defeats at home and two draws away.

“We need to build a stronger team for next season.”

Monaco sold Benjamin Mendy, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Bernardo Silva and Kylian Mbappe in the summer, as Europe’s biggest clubs targeted the players who made the Ligue 1 side one of the success stories of last season’s competition.

They have regrouped well domestically and are second to Paris St-Germain in the French top flight, but that form has not translated into European competition.

Monaco finish their Champions League campaign against Porto at the Estadio do Dragao on 6 December.
