Gabonese Soldiers Seize Control, Declare the End of Current Regime

A group of Gabonese soldiers appeared on television and announced that they were ending the current regime led by President Ali Bongo Ondimba. They declared the cancellation of the recent election results, which had shown President Bongo as the winner.

Gunfire was heard during the announcement in the capital, Libreville. The soldiers stated that they were acting on behalf of the “Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions” and mentioned that they dissolved all the major institutions of the country, including the government, Senate, National Assembly, and Constitutional Court. They also closed the country’s borders and nullified the August 26, 2023, general elections.

The group included members from the Republican Guard, regular army, and police officers. The soldiers’ message was broadcast on Gabon’s public television channels.
