Eight Dead and 11 Critical After Consuming Killer Alcoholic Drinks

In some parts of Ogun State, there have been distressing incidents where at least eight people lost their lives, and 11 others are in critical condition due to the alleged consumption of lethal alcoholic beverages.

The Ogun State Government issued a statement on Sunday warning citizens about the serious dangers associated with consuming locally brewed alcoholic drinks and other unapproved products from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

Dr. Tomi Coker, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, revealed that there were reports of 11 severe illnesses and eight deaths directly linked to the consumption of locally brewed alcoholic products. The incidents occurred between July 18 and 20, 2023, in the Ijebu-North East and Odogbolu Local Government Areas of Ogun State.

As a response to the situation, the Ministry of Health has initiated a thorough investigation into the source and nature of these hazardous products. In the meantime, the public is strongly advised to exercise extreme caution and avoid consuming drinks from unverified sources while the investigation is ongoing.

The statement emphasized the importance of consuming only products that have been officially approved and certified by NAFDAC. Unauthorized production and distribution of alcoholic beverages and other consumable items can pose significant health risks, as they are often manufactured in unregulated and unhygienic conditions, potentially containing harmful substances and toxins. Such substances can lead to severe health complications and, in some cases, fatal outcomes, as demonstrated by the recent incidents in Ijebu-North East and Odogbolu LGAs.

The government urged the public to report any suspicious locally brewed alcoholic drink to the appropriate authorities or NAFDAC. In addition, residents should promptly report any cases of illness or death after consuming similar products, including herbal concoctions, to the nearest government hospital.

The government reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts among the government, regulatory bodies, and the public to combat the sale and consumption of harmful products.
