Tinubu Brokers Peace Between Wike, Fubara, and Rivers Lawmakers

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has successfully reconciled the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike; suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara; and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

The truce followed a late-night meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where the President hosted the feuding parties in a bid to end the prolonged political crisis in the state.

Wike and Fubara have been locked in a power struggle over control of Rivers State, a dispute that escalated to the State House of Assembly and led to multiple court cases. Although the Supreme Court ruled in favour of the lawmakers, tensions persisted, with threats of impeachment and further unrest.

In March, President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending Governor Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all members of the State Assembly. He also appointed retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as Administrator to oversee the state’s affairs.

Sources within the Presidency said that Tuesday night’s meeting followed earlier talks between Wike, Fubara, and the lawmakers. According to a senior aide, the trio presented a united front during the session with the President.

“From their body language, it’s clear the differences have been resolved,” the source said. “This visit was likely to thank the President for his intervention and support in restoring peace.”

President Tinubu had repeatedly urged the stakeholders to resolve their differences amicably, emphasizing the importance of political stability in the oil-rich state.
