Social media erupted on Sunday as Nigerians reacted sharply to the inclusion of author and political commentator, Reno Omokri, on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s newly released ambassadorial nominees list.
Omokri, who has long been known for his fierce criticism of the Tinubu administration, was named among the 17 non-career envoys submitted to the Senate for confirmation. The development triggered widespread outrage, with many Nigerians accusing him of inconsistency and political opportunism.
Critics recalled Omokri’s emphatic public vow in 2023 that he would “never work with Tinubu in any capacity,” arguing that his sudden acceptance of a government nomination undermines the integrity he often claims to uphold. Some opposition figures and civic groups questioned the credibility of the entire list, describing the appointments as politically motivated rather than merit-driven.
The backlash grew louder as commentators argued that the nomination reflects a troubling trend of rewarding controversial political actors with diplomatic positions. Despite the criticisms, the Presidency has not responded to the public outcry, while the Senate is expected to begin the screening process in the coming days.
