Officers of the Lagos State Police Command on Friday prevented an elderly woman from taking her life by jumping off Carter Bridge into the lagoon.
The incident was confirmed in a statement posted by the police on X (formerly Twitter), which noted that operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) on patrol intervened just in time to save the woman.
“At about 12:20 p.m. today, operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) on patrol successfully prevented an elderly woman from jumping into the lagoon from Carter Bridge,” the statement read.
The unnamed woman was taken to the RRS headquarters, where the Commander, CSP Shola Jejeloye, engaged her in a private discussion alongside her husband and 30-year-old son to address underlying family issues.
Following the meeting, CSP Jejeloye reportedly offered the woman emotional support and a cash gift, after which she was released into the care of her family.
“The family expressed deep gratitude to the Commander for the squad’s timely intervention, his heartfelt advice, and the financial support,” the police added.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns around mental health and economic pressure in urban Nigeria, as authorities continue to respond to rising suicide cases across the country.
