Police arrest bandits’ wives with AK-47, ammunition in Kwara forest

Kwara State Police Command has arrested two women suspected to be wives of kidnappers for attempting to deliver an AK-47 rifle and 31 rounds of live ammunition to their husbands hiding in a forest enclave.

Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, made the disclosure over the weekend while briefing journalists on recent security operations in the state.

According to Ojo, the suspects — identified as Aisha Haruna, Rabi Umaru, and Fatimoh Abubakar — were apprehended at the Babanla Motor Park following credible intelligence. He said officers intercepted a suspicious vehicle, prompting one of the female passengers to flee into a nearby bush upon sighting security operatives.

A thorough search of the vehicle led to the discovery of the firearm and ammunition concealed inside one of the women’s bags.

“One of the suspects confessed that she received the weapon from a man known as ‘Mai-Gowaye’ in Kaduna, with instructions to deliver it to another contact named ‘Saleh’ in the Baba-Sango forest,” Ojo said.

He added that another woman admitted she was on her way to reunite with her husband, a known member of a kidnap-for-ransom gang operating within the forest.

The third suspect, who fled the scene, is believed to also be the wife of a kidnapper and is currently on the run. Police said efforts are ongoing to apprehend her and dismantle the criminal network in the area.

In a related development, two other suspects — Suleiman Jamiu and Mumini Mohammed — were arrested in the Share area of Ifelodun Local Government for being in possession of N11.3 million, suspected to be proceeds from kidnapping activities.

The Commissioner assured residents that the command remains committed to rooting out criminal elements and restoring peace and security across the state.
