The Ondo State Police Command has arrested ten suspects in connection with a violent robbery attack on Igoba Community in Akure North Local Government Area of the state.
The armed gang reportedly stormed the community around 11:30 p.m. on Thursday, dispossessing residents of valuables at gunpoint and inflicting injuries on some victims.
It was learnt that the hoodlums later advanced to the palace of the traditional ruler of the town, Oba Adinlewa John, where they allegedly attempted to assassinate him. The monarch, however, narrowly escaped unhurt.
Confirming the incident in a statement issued on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer for the command, Mr. Olayinka Ayanlade, said operatives swung into action immediately after receiving a distress call and arrested the suspects.
“On the said day, a group of hoodlums, armed with firearms, knives, charms, and other dangerous weapons, invaded Igoba Community with the intent to wreak havoc. In the course of their violent activities, one Mrs. Ogunoye Oluomo was viciously attacked, injured, and dispossessed of her belongings.
“The assailants further advanced to the palace of His Royal Highness, Oba Adinlewa John of Igoba, where they attempted to assassinate the monarch. Fortunately, the royal father narrowly escaped the life-threatening assault,” Ayanlade said.
He added that the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Adebowale Lawal, immediately ordered the deployment of tactical and operational teams led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, resulting in the arrest of the ten suspects.
According to Ayanlade, the suspects have confessed to their roles in the crime and would be charged to court after investigation.
Items recovered from them include two locally made pistols, one single-barrel gun, several rounds of live ammunition, assorted charms, knives, and machetes used during the attack.
The police spokesperson assured residents of Igoba and surrounding communities of sustained patrols and intelligence-led operations to prevent further criminal activities in the area.
