Olubadan Snubs Alaafin at Oyo Interfaith Gathering, Sparks Protocol Debate

A moment of royal protocol tension played out on Tuesday at the 2026 Oyo State Interfaith Gathering in Ibadan, when the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, declined to shake hands with the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, triggering widespread public debate.

The interfaith meeting, held at the Secretariat’s Grand Space, Ibadan, brought together traditional rulers, religious leaders, senior government officials and community stakeholders to promote peace, unity and religious tolerance across Oyo State.

Eyewitnesses said the incident occurred during the arrival of dignitaries when the Alaafin extended his hand in greeting to the Olubadan, a gesture that was not reciprocated. The Olubadan subsequently greeted Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and other officials before proceeding to his seat.

The moment, captured in several videos now circulating on social media, immediately sparked discussions over Yoruba traditional hierarchy, royal protocol and the conduct expected of monarchs at official state functions.

While some observers described the development as unfortunate, others urged caution, noting that long-established customs and traditional rules may have guided the Olubadan’s action rather than personal disrespect.

The incident has also revived ongoing debates surrounding the Alaafin of Oyo stool, which in recent times has generated controversy within the Yoruba traditional institution, including earlier public disagreements involving the Ooni of Ife.

As reactions continue to trail the event, analysts say such moments underscore the sensitivity of protocol among traditional rulers and the need for clarity at inter-royal and state-sponsored gatherings.
