In a bold move to strengthen food security and reduce Nigeria’s dependency on food imports, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Wednesday launched the Produce for Lagos Programme alongside a ₦500 billion Offtake Guarantee Fund.
The dual initiative, unveiled at the Lagos House in Ikeja, is aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity and creating inclusive prosperity across the country, according to the governor.
“Lagos is Nigeria’s largest food market, consuming over 50 per cent of food traded in the South-West, with a food economy valued at ₦16.14 trillion,” Sanwo-Olu noted during the launch. “This programme demonstrates our commitment to achieving food security, sustainable growth, and prosperity—not just for Lagos, but for Nigeria.”
The governor explained that the initiative would guarantee offtake contracts for producers, provide access to finance, and support logistics—thereby integrating more Nigerians into Lagos’s dynamic food economy.
