Benue Speaker Resigns 48 Hours After Suspending Four Lawmakers House Elects Suspended Member, Alfred Emberga, as Successor

Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Hyacinth Dajoh, has stepped down from office, barely 48 hours after suspending four lawmakers over an alleged impeachment plot.

In a letter to the Clerk of the Assembly on Sunday, Dajoh said his resignation was “in good faith and in the best interest of the state.” He thanked his colleagues for the opportunity to serve and pledged continued commitment to representing Gboko West Constituency.

Following his exit, the Assembly convened an emergency sitting where members unanimously elected Alfred Emberga, the former Deputy Chief Whip representing Makurdi North, as the new Speaker.

Ironically, Emberga was among the four legislators suspended last Friday alongside Terna Shimawua (Kian), Cyril Ekong (Obi), and James Umoru (Apa). They had been accused of “conspiracy to cause chaos” by Majority Leader Saater Tiseer.

Governor Hyacinth Alia has since distanced himself from the crisis, denying any involvement in the alleged impeachment plot.

As of press time, it was unclear whether Emberga had been formally reinstated before emerging as Speaker.
