Army arrests 183 suspected internet fraudsters, cultist in Delta raid

The Nigerian Army has arrested 183 suspected internet fraudsters and a cultist during a raid operation in Warri and its environs, Delta State.

According to a statement signed by Captain Iliyasu Bawa Rijau, Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 63 Brigade, the operation was conducted on July 19, 2025, by troops of Headquarters 63 Brigade and Sector 1, Joint Task Force, South-South, Operation Delta Safe (OPDS), following credible intelligence on the criminal activities in the area.

The 183 suspects, all males between the ages of 16 and 29, were apprehended in apartments believed to be serving as training centres for internet fraud. Items recovered from the scene include 274 assorted laptops, 87 mobile phones, nine laptop chargers, one table phone, and two WiFi devices.

The suspects and the recovered items are currently undergoing preliminary investigation, pending further action.

In a related development, troops also arrested a suspected cultist, Mr. Igbe Lucky Chika, 26, identified as a member of the Viking confraternity. He was arrested in Ezionun Community on the same day.

Items recovered from the suspect include a locally made firearm, an axe, a cutlass, two mobile phones, and a Toyota Camry with registration number Delta ASB 41 BE. Preliminary findings confirmed his membership of the cult group, and he will be handed over to relevant security agencies for further investigation and prosecution.

Commander of 63 Brigade and Sector 1 Joint Task Force, Brigadier General M.A. Shonibare, commended the troops for their professionalism and swift action. He urged residents to continue supporting the military in its efforts to rid the region of criminal elements and maintain peace and security.
