The Anambra State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development has taken steps to safeguard the welfare of a young child after the arrest and remand of a woman accused of assaulting a minor.
The suspect, identified as Mrs. Chisom Chukwuyere, was brought to the Ministry by operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) alongside her child, Chukwutulumugo Chukwuyere, before being taken into custody for further investigation and prosecution.
According to information released by the Ministry, the child was formally received by officials in line with established child protection procedures to ensure his safety and wellbeing following his mother’s arrest.
Sources indicated that both Mrs. Chukwuyere and her husband are expected to face legal consequences in connection with the case, while arrangements have been made to secure the welfare of their children.
Following due process, the Ministry handed over the child to members of the husband’s family. The boy is now in the care of Mrs. Rita Onuoha, the elder sister of Mr. Chukwudi Chukwuyere, while another family member, identified as the husband’s brother, is also assisting with the children’s care.
Mrs. Onuoha reportedly assured government officials that she would take full responsibility for the welfare of the child and his siblings during the period their parents remain in custody.
The Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development said it would continue to monitor the children closely to ensure they receive adequate care, protection and support.
The development comes amid growing public outrage over the alleged assault of a minor, a case that has attracted widespread attention on social media and renewed calls for stricter enforcement of child protection laws in Anambra State.
Officials reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting vulnerable children and ensuring that families affected by criminal investigations receive appropriate social welfare support.
