An abducted medical doctor, Dr Ibrahim Tahir, has regained his freedom after his family reportedly paid a N50 million ransom to his captors in Auchi, Edo State.
Tahir was kidnapped alongside his younger brother on January 2, 2026, at their residence along City Pride Road in the Igbira Camp area of Auchi, Esan West Local Government Area. The abduction occurred while the victims were opening the gate to their compound.
Tragically, the younger brother was later killed by the abductors. His remains were discovered on January 5 near Orley River, off City Pride Road, Igbira Camp.
The victim’s father said the ransom was paid in two instalments of N20 million and N30 million before his son was released on Wednesday evening at about 8:00 p.m.
According to him, the N50 million ransom was raised through contributions from family members, non-governmental organisations, friends, and other well-wishers.
“My son has been released by the kidnappers after we paid N50 million. I feel relieved that he is free, but I also lost another son,” he said.
He added that Dr Tahir sustained a gunshot injury during the ordeal and is currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital.
“My son was brushed by a bullet, but he is responding to treatment,” the father stated.
Meanwhile, the Edo State Police Command has confirmed the release of the abducted doctor. The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Eno Ikoedem, acknowledged the development when contacted.
As of the time of filing this report, details surrounding the arrest of the suspects remain unclear.
