Gunmen have reportedly attacked the convoy of Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, shortly after he left the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji, in Osogbo on Wednesday.
The incident reportedly sparked tension in the area as security operatives attached to the governor’s convoy engaged the suspected attackers in a gun battle.
According to reports, the confrontation lasted for several minutes, with sources putting the duration of the exchange of gunfire at between 12 and 15 minutes.
The attack reportedly occurred shortly after Adeleke’s visit to the Ataoja Palace, although details surrounding the circumstances of the incident remained unclear as of the time of filing this report.
Residents and traders in the area were said to have been thrown into panic as gunshots reportedly rang out during the confrontation.
Security personnel attached to the governor’s convoy were said to have responded to the attack, engaging the gunmen and creating an escape route for the governor’s convoy.
It was not immediately clear whether the attackers were specifically targeting Governor Adeleke or whether the incident was connected to the heightened political tension in the state.
There were also no immediate confirmed reports of casualties among the governor, his aides or security personnel.
The incident comes amid heightened political activities and tensions in Osun State following the recent governorship election.
Authorities are expected to provide further details on the identity of the attackers, their motive and whether any arrests have been made.
Until an official statement is released by the Osun State Police Command or the state government, details of the attack remain subject to confirmation.
The development has nevertheless raised fresh concerns over security in Osogbo, particularly around movements involving top government officials and other prominent political figures.
