UNILAG Lecturers Begin Indefinite Strike Over ‘Amputated’ Salaries

Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Lagos chapter, have commenced an indefinite strike over what they described as “amputated” salaries paid to lecturers for January and February 2026.

The union announced the industrial action in a communiqué issued after an emergency congress, signed by its Chairperson, Idou Kehinde, and Secretary, Adesina Arikawe.

ASUU said the strike, which takes effect from Wednesday, March 11, will continue until the university management pays the affected salaries in full.

According to the union, lecturers on the Akoka campus did not receive Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) in their January salaries, while those at the Idi-Araba campus were denied both EAA and Clinical Teaching Allowance (CATA).

The union further alleged that the February salaries paid to members were also slashed.

ASUU described the deductions as discriminatory and unacceptable, accusing the university administration of acting unilaterally in implementing the cuts.

The union stated that its congress unanimously resolved to reject the salary reductions and withdraw services until the outstanding payments are settled.

It added that the decision aligns with an earlier National Executive Council resolution and insisted that the strike would remain in force until lecturers receive their January and February 2026 salaries in full.
